Keeping your dogs teeth or cats teeth clean is important for their health. Home dog or cat dental care can be easy.
Imagine what would happen if you never brushed your teeth. Proper home dental care for our pets is very important. Without it our pets have horrible breath and infected gums. Many people do not brush their pet's teeth and probably won't start anytime soon, but that's OK, there are alternatives to the toothbrush, like dental chews and treats.
Brushing your pet's teeth is by far the best for keeping your pets teeth clean. If your pet already has tartar build up this will not help, it is only to be used as a preventative to tartar build up and gingivitis. It is also important to remember to only use toothpaste that is labeled for dog/cat use. If they swallow human toothpaste it might make them sick. When first starting to brush your pets teeth use a finger brush - this will get them used to you manipulating their mouth and the taste of toothpaste. Gradually move up to using an actual brush. Dog/cat toothbrushes and flavored paste can be purchased from a pet store or your vets office. If you are not comfortable having your hand that close to your pets choppers then don't try to brush their teeth.
Giving a dental chew is an alternative to brushing teeth. These treats are generally labeled for once a day use. Keep in mind that not all chews are created equal. The brand C.E.T. Chews have enzymes that work to keep breath fresh and control plaque. Greenies are also great for the teeth. Make sure you purchase the proper sized chew for your pet, both of these treats are labeled with weight recommendations. You should never give any animal bones to your pet.
Science Diet makes t/d as a complete diet for your pet. It is available in small bites for small breed dogs, regular bites, and feline formula. This product is made to actually scrub your pets teeth as it chews. This is a great product because if you don't want to use it as a diet you can give several pieces a day as treats.
Rinses are made to be used between brushings. There are many brands out on the market. Some you squirt into the mouth and some are made to be added to the water.
Home dental care can make a difference in your pets life and your pocket book. Most animals eventually will need a professional dental cleaning done but if you use some type of home care you might be able to go longer between cleanings. Before starting any home care check with your veterinarian for his/her recommendations.
If your pet has any of these symptoms schedule an appointment with your vet right away, before starting any home dental care.
