Parakeets are small birds and need care. Learn some tips for making sure your pet is healthy.

If you are considering a pet parakeet for your family, you should do some research to understand how to choose and care for this little bird. Parakeets make great pets, but you must make a commitment to care for it properly before making a purchase. Learn some tips for caring for parakeets here.

About Parakeets

Before picking out a family parakeet, you need to make sure that it is the right pet for you. Parakeets can live anywhere from 7 to 12 years, and some even longer with proper care. Is your family ready to make such a long commitment to a pet? In addition, you must also make sure that you are ready to care for the bird. Parakeets do well alone, but only if you make the time to keep them properly stimulated with toys and interaction. If you feel you cannot give the bird the attention it needs, you may want to consider purchasing two parakeets at the same time.

Choosing a Parakeet

If you have decided that a parakeet is right for you, then you should know how to pick a good one. Most pet stores sell parakeets. The bird will cost you about $20. Remember that there are different breeds of parakeets, so some may cost more than others. When you look at a parakeet, observe it for a while and make sure it looks healthy. It should respond well in the cage and should not look “droopy” or sick. It should have clear eyes and a bright color. If the sex of your bird matters, the pet store can help you tell the difference. Generally, a male will have a bluish bump above the beak, while a female has a brown bump. With younger birds, it is harder to tell the difference.

Getting a Cage and Other Equipment

Parakeets will enjoy plenty of room to move. You should purchase a cage as large as you can afford. You will also want to keep your bird busy with two or three good bird toys and several wooden perches. Also, get the right type of food. There are many commercial birdseed products that are mixed with the types of seed that are good for your bird. Your parakeet will also enjoy fresh fruit and vegetables. Provide a cuttlebone inside the cage as well. Consider adding vitamins made for parakeets to the water each day. Make sure you change out the water each day and take out any uneaten food to avoid bacteria.

Parakeets are by far the most popular bird for household pets. They are smart, brightly colored and are generally easy to care for. With the proper care and attention, your parakeet will bring your family lasting companionship and enjoyment.
