Most pet owners are diligent to take their pets to the vet for needed vaccines and other shots. However, too many owners neglect to provide proper dental health for their pets. As February is National Pet Dental Care month, it's a good time to make sure your pets have good dental health. Caring for your pet's dental health begins with you. Here are some tips for ensuring your pet’s teeth and gums stay healthy.

How to Brush Your Pet’s Teeth

Although sometimes it's not an easy job, it's important to regularly brush your pet's teeth. Granted, some pets are more cooperative than others are. If you have a stubborn dog or cat, you may want to introduce the toothpaste by just rubbing it on his teeth before using a toothbrush. In other words, gradually introduce the toothbrush.

  • Type of Toothbrush and Toothpaste---- Ask your vet for a special toothbrush, designed for your dog and/ or cat. Meanwhile, substitute with an ultra-soft brush made for people. Although a human toothbrush can be temporarily substituted, do not use human toothpaste as it could upset your pet's stomach. And, of course, you can always ask your vet for tips on how to properly brush your pet's teeth.
  • ·Be Gentle----Rather than holding your pet down forcefully, be gentle, making brushing a pleasant experience. Small pets (such as toy dogs and cats) can be held in your lap, as you stroke them lovingly. Throughout the procedure, pet and praise your pet. If he cooperates, promptly reward with a treat, so it registers that being a good dog (or cat) is worth the effort.
  • Beef Bouillon Approach---For resistant pets, you may want to try the beef bouillon approach. First, coat your finger in beef bouillon and then run it over your cat or dog's teeth, as well as his mouth. Then gradually introduce the specially formulated pet toothbrush, making gentle, short circular strokes.

Specially Formulated Pet Food

  • Look for the “Seal of Acceptance”----Besides brushing, select certain specially prepared foods that promote good dental health, as they've been established effectual in fighting plaque and tartar buildup. Look for the "Seal of Acceptance" from the Veterinary Oral Health Council on pet products, which meets defined regulations for plaque, as well as tartar control in both cats and dogs.
  • No table scraps---You may think you're making your dog or cat happy by feeding him table scraps. However, don't do it as table scraps can increase plaque and tartar buildup, as well as lead to other health problems. What's more, your pet will probably live longer as he won't be overweight.
  • Bones---Chewing on bones specifically designed for pets (and not the ones from a leftover roast) also promotes good dental health. Synthetically made bones are better as they’re not as abrasive on your pet’s teeth. Besides bones, also give your pet toys to chew that also help keep his gums healthy.

Regular Vet Checkups for Dental Care

Besides caring for your pet's teeth, also be sure to visit your veterinarian for regular dental checkups, rather than waiting for your pet's annual physical. As an excessive buildup of tartar and plaque can affect your pet's health, it's just as important to have dental checkups as it is regular physical exams.

If you're careful to follow these tips, as well as others from your veterinarian, you'll be rewarded by a pet that won't have to suffer dental problems. As a result, he'll probably live longer than if you had neglected caring for his dental hygiene.
