Celebrities and Their Dogs In 2007Popular Celebrity Pet Stories of 2007
Oprah Winfrey, Vanessa Williams, Ellen DeGeneres, and Paris Hilton all went through some good and bad times with their pets in 2007.
Oprah Winfrey and Gracie – Oprah lost one of her beloved dogs, Gracie, on May 26th 2007. Gracie, a Golden Retriever, choked to death on a plastic toy ball. This type of accident is not uncommon in households where both large and small dogs reside. Owners keep small and large toys to accommodate all pets; if a large dog plays with one of the small toys then a tragedy can occur, as it did in Oprah's home. The smaller toys are a choking hazard in larger breed dogs. The small toys are also considered a foreign body risk because if swallowed they can become stuck in the GI tract. Vanessa Williams and Enzo – Vanessa William's Yorkshire Terrier, Enzo, was stolen just outside her suburban New York home on Memorial day, 2007. Vanessa's dog had been implanted with a microchip called HomeAgain that helps reunite lost pets with their owners. Little Enzo was located by a veterinarian who scanned the pooch and found the microchip ID. Microchipping is quickly becoming an important way for helping pet owners find their lost pets. A veterinarian can insert the chip in pets of all sizes during an office visit. Paris Hilton and Hendrix – Paris Hilton bought a new Chihuahua in July of 2007. Puppy Hendrix was of course named for Jimi Hendrix. Paris bought this puppy in a pet store called Pets of Bel Aire, in Los Angeles. Many small and large breed dogs are in need of good homes and can be found through local rescues and shelters. It is important for new pets to be seen by a veterinarian and receive a clean bill of health. Remember to keep all pets up to date on the recommended vaccinations. Ellen DeGeneres and the Adoption Fiasco – Ellen DeGeneres and girlfriend Portia de Rossi adopted a Brussels Griffon mix from a local rescue. In October of 2007 the couple decided that the puppy, Iggy, was too much for their home and gave the puppy to a friend. The rescue has a “no right to transfer” clause in the contract signed by the couple. Many rescues have this clause and ask that pets be returned to the rescue if the family is no longer able to keep them. This became a controversy when the rescue confiscated the dog from DeGeneres's friend and adopted little Iggy to a new family.
