You and your pet will have to live with the name you choose for him for a long time. This article outlines how you may choose to go about naming your pet.

A new pet in your home is a memorable experience. It is almost like bringing a new baby home from the hospital. And it takes almost as much care. New pets have to be fed and taken care of and LOVED!

One of the fun things to do when you do get a new pet is deciding on a name for it. You can choose a name in any number of ways--and of course there are so many names to choose from. Just remember that the name you give your pet now will be one that you and he have to live with for a long time. You have to be comfortable calling him by that name. Imagine your pet running down the street with you calling after him before deciding to give him any name.

You can choose a pet name that is representative of the type or breed of your pet. For example, a shy and timid kitten could be called ‘Sweetie’ or even ‘Angel’. Or you could name a Poodle ‘Pom-Pom’. A bird might be called ‘Flitter’ or ‘Flutter-Budget’. You get the idea.

You may also choose to name your pet after a famous person. ‘Einstein’ is a popular choice, as is ‘Naploeon’ or ‘Cleopatra’. You can also match a name to a famous person name with some of the same traits as your pet. For instance, a solemn looking lab puppy might be named ‘Churchill’, or a mischievous pet might be called ‘Dennis the Menace’ (Menace for short).

Another way to name your pet is by color. Many people choose this method of giving their pet an appropriate name. ‘Pumpkin’ would suit an orange cat or ‘Smokey’ a grey one. A black lab could be called ‘Midnight’ or a colorful parrot could be called ‘Rainbow’. Favorite names for a pet with white paws would be ‘Boots’ or ‘Sneakers’.

The best way, however, to name your pet is by picking up on your pet’s personality. Just as your name may suit you, an appropriate name for your pet would suit his individual personality. How about ‘Yo-Yo’ for an energetic pet or ‘Waggles’ for a happy tail-wagging dog? ‘Valor’ might suit a regal German Shepherd or ‘Chaos’ a mischievous kitten. To choose this method of naming your pet, you may have to live with him for a few days before making your final decision.

Having two pets of the same kind in your home can offer a new set of options for pet names. For example, for two different sex pets how about ‘Anthony’ and ‘Cleopatra’, ‘Dagwood’ and ‘Blondie’ or ‘Samson’ and ‘Delilah’? For same sex pets ‘Lucy’ and ‘Ethel’, ‘Cheech’ and ‘Chong’ or even ‘Rhythm’ and ‘Blues’ would work well. There are any number of famous pairs that you could use as a play on your pets’ names.

Of course, there are always the tried and true, traditional pet names that are popular with many people. You could always name your pet ‘Rover’ or ‘Spot’—but what’s the fun in that? Be creative in choosing a name for your pet and have fun with your new pal. Make the name as special as your new pet is sure to be.
