When disaster strikes it's important to have everything you need ready to go in a 72 hour kit for people and pets.

Hurricane Katrina taught us the hard way that we need to prepare ahead of time. I've listed below a few things to include in a 72 hour kit for pets.

  • Pet First Aid Kit -
  • In an emergency you never know what kind of dangers you might run into, a well stocked first aid kit may come in handy.
  • Vaccination record from your veterinary office.
  • If you need to go to a shelter or hotel you may be asked for a record showing your pets vaccinations.
  • Extra blankets -
  • Have a blanket available for each pet or a towel for cats and small breed dogs.
  • Medications -
  • I recommend including an extra stock of any medications your pet may take in your 72 hour kit.
  • Food -
  • Make sure you pack plenty of your pets regular diet.
  • Water -
  • Have available enough drinking water for people and pets. One gallon of water per person or pet is usually enough.
  • Pet Carrier -
  • This is very important, some shelters will not take pets without a carrier. Have a carrier available for even large breed dogs.

It is important to rotate medications, food, and water so everything is fresh and not expired.

Also, have ready a list of hotels that take pets, just in case you need it.
