Inexpensive guinea pig toys are easy to find in the pet store or make out of household materials and will help keep your guinea pig healthy.

Playtime is essential for any pet's health and well-being, and guinea pigs are no exception. Many suitable toys can be found at the pet store in unexpected places. Using items you can find around your house or backyard, you can even put together homemade guinea pig toys. Simple and cheap, these toys will exercise your guinea pig, keep its teeth worn down, and provide mental stimulation.

Why Guinea Pigs Need Toys

Guinea pigs are intelligent creatures whose minds need to be stimulated and kept sharp. By providing them with activities to do and toys to play with, you will help prevent them from becoming bored and unhealthy.

Many toys serve a secondary purpose; for example, toys that are meant to be gnawed upon will help to prevent the guinea pig's teeth from growing too long. Overgrown teeth can cause serious health problems. Toys also provide exercise, which is important to any creature's health and will extend the life of your guinea pig.

Pet Store Guinea Pig Toys

Many pet stores do not have toys specifically for guinea pigs. However, rabbit toys can work perfectly, as rabbits and guinea pigs are similar in their needs. Since rabbits tend to be larger than guinea pigs, avoid toys that are too big.

Another excellent place to look is in the bird aisle. Toys that are made with wood pieces, especially ones covered in bark, are favorites with guinea pigs. Avoid superfluous pieces such as bells, which may cause tooth damage if gnawed. Size is a concern here: choose simple toys made for small parrots. Guinea pigs are simple creatures and don't need elaborate toys to be entertained.

Homemade Guinea Pig Toys

Many materials to make homemade guinea pig toys can be found around the house. Used toilet paper and paper towel rolls can be stuffed with vegetables or timothy hay, and if closed up at the ends, can provide a challenge. Cardboard boxes and paper bags are fun, especially if doorways are cut out in the sides. Egg cartons full of tasty treats can last for a while. Guinea pigs like to cuddle and would appreciate a towel or sock to snuggle with.

PVC pipes can be used as tunnels. Just make sure they are at least 4 inches in diameter, so your guinea pig won't get stuck! With creativity and good judgment, many household items that one would just throw away can be turned into a homemade guinea pig toy.

Keep Your Guinea Pig Happy and Healthy

Hopefully, these tips will help you save money and provide hours of entertainment for your guinea pig at the same time. Remember, guinea pigs are intelligent creatures and will appreciate having a variety of toys to play with. A quick trip to the pet store or search around your house can be productive in finding some great toys.
