Many pet owners celebrate their dogs' birthdays, so why not hold a pet birthday party for your dog? Check out these pet birthday party activities and other party ideas.

Many dog owners view their four-legged companions as "children" or "family members" and for these pet owners, it's only fitting to celebrate the dog's birthday with a party for pets.

Organizing a pet party can be a fun task and with a bit of creativity, dog owners can host a unique party for dogs and their owners. But some pet owners may need some help coming up with some dog birthday party ideas when it comes to actually planning a pet's birthday party. Read on for advice and dog birthday party ideas!

Write Up a Dog Party Guest List and Send Out the Invitations

Create a party guest list and invite the dog's four-legged friends from the dog park, the neighborhood and the doggy daycare center. And don't forget to mention that each dog should be accompanied by his or her owner! Also invite family members and friends whom the birthday dog enjoys.

Pet birthday party hosts should also consider providing party guests a wish list for the birthday dog, enclosed with the invitations. And if the dog has enough toys, treats and clothing, consider asking guests to make a donation to the dog's favorite animal shelter or pet charity.

A Dog's Birthday Cake

Food is an important part of any birthday party celebration, so begin by creating a birthday cake for the birthday dog. There are an array of dog-friendly birthday cake recipes available online and they're virtually all sure to please the birthday dog and his furry, four-legged party guests. It's also a good idea to create a second birthday cake for the human guests.

A few birthday cake recipes can be enjoyed by both dogs and humans. This latter type of dog birthday cake recipe usually involves more of a bread-style cake, topped with a cream cheese-based frosting, as the sweet, sugary frosting on most human birthday cakes is simply too much for the dog's system to handle.

Other Foods for a Dog's Birthday Party

In addition to the dog's birthday cake, it's a great idea to make up some other homemade dog treats and pet-friendly foods, which can be used as dog party favors. Ideally, these dog recipes should be for items that can be made available for the pet party guests to take home for later, as too much unfamiliar food can leave the canine party-goers with an upset stomach.

All the usual human party foods will appeal to the human party guests, but beware of what items are served. With lots of dog birthday party guests running around, there's always a chance that a dog could eat some of the "human food" during the party, so avoid serving potentially toxic foods like chocolate.

Fun Activities for a Pet's Birthday Party

The best activities for a dog's birthday party are activities that will appeal to the dogs and the human party guests. Consider some of the following fun events for a dog's birthday celebration:

  • Make the pet's birthday party a costume party! Party guests will love an excuse to dig out those adorable dog Halloween costumes for the event, which can include pet costume contests for the best dog costume, most unique dog costume or the cutest dog costume.
  • Host a cake eating contest! Instead of just feeding the dogs a slice of the birthday dog's cake, turn it into a fun contest, with the winner receiving a batch of homemade pet treats.
  • Hold a multi-round fetching race for the dogs and their owners. The dog who fetches the ball the fastest wins!
  • Host a doggy treat hunt. Spread a bale of hay on the ground and hide treats in the hay. Let each dog find the treats (one at a time to avoid arguments over the treats!) and the dog who finds and eats his homemade dog treats the fastest wins! And when the treat hunt is over, the dogs will enjoy rolling around in the hay.
  • Create a dog-and-owner "agility" course. Set up some cones to serve as a zig-zag obstacle. Create a couple of homemade hurdles. Get a fabric tube for the dogs to run through. Set up a platform (i.e. a hay bale) where each owner has to get their dog to sit for five seconds. And get ready to laugh as each human party guest tries to coax his/her dog through the homemade "agility" course.

Hosting a birthday party for a dog can be a fun experience for both man and beast. And don't forget, pet parties aren't limited to birthdays only. Consider hosting a pet party for Halloween, Christmas or Hanukkah.
