Prayers for PetsPrayer for a Sick Pet, Thanksgiving for a New Pet, and More
Pets go through tough times, just like people. The following interfaith prayers invite God to care for pets during difficult times and to celebrate the good times.
Pets, as members of the family, are an important part of life. As God's creation, pets are a part of God's world for those who believe. This article contains simple, interfaith prayers to honor pets and the people who love them. Thanksgiving for a New PetNothing brings joy to a family quite like a new pet. Whether the pet is a baby, or an older pet entering the home, his or her entrance is a means to celebrate. The following prayer thanks God for the new pet and blesses the new pet's addition in the home: "Loving God, thank you for the gift of [insert pet's name] in our home. Please keep [insert pet's name] happy, healthy, and safe, that we all may enjoy years together. Amen." A family might share this prayer together, with the pet in the midst of them, or right after the pet enters the home to mark the occasion. Prayer for a Sick PetEven the bounciest and loudest pets get sick sometimes. The following prayer asks God to heal and comfort the animal friend and bless all who care for him/her: "God of healing, please comfort and strengthen [insert pet's name] during his/her illness. Ease his/her fear and pain, and guide the vet and all caring for him/her, that he/ she may recover fully. Comfort us, too, God, that we may better care for [insert pet's name] and make decisions that are best for him/her. Amen." If a family is upset by a pet's condition, another person may offer this prayer to comfort and strengthen the pet owners during this difficult time. Prayer for Moving a PetTaking a pet on a trip, either traveling or moving, can be tough on everyone. Some animals may need a tranquilizer to make it, and often they arrive scared and disoriented. The following prayer asks God to comfort a pet during a trip: "God of power and might, protect [insert pet's name] as he/she travels by [insert mode of transportation and reason for move.] Calm his/her fear and anxiety, let him/her feel how much his/her owner loves him/her, and guide him/her to arrive at the destination safe and healthy. Amen." Prayer for an Upset PetPets are sensitive to changes in their environment, including the owner's problems, visitors, and a new pet in the home. The following prayer asks God to calm and cherish an upset animal, that he/she may return to normal: "God, please be with [insert pet's name] as he/she struggles with [insert reasons such as illness, new pet, or family problems that are causing pet's trauma, if known.] Grant him/her extra attention and love, that he/she knows he/she is a beloved member of your creation. Amen." Pet owners might also pray this prayer right before leaving a pet in a kennel or with a pet sitter, as the owner's absence is often a trying time for a pet. Thanksgiving for a PetA pet's birthday, healing from illness, or any time one feels grateful for a pet's company is a good time to offer God thanks for the pet's presence in the home. The following prayer offers a general thanksgiving for a pet: "Loving God, thank you for the gift of [insert pet's name] in our home and for all the good times we've enjoyed together [family may share memories of pet and favorite attributes if desired.] [Insert pet's name] is special to us-please keep him/her safe, that we may enjoy many good times to come. Amen." Encouraging children to give thanks for a pet helps them learn responsibility. A child is more likely to be enthusiastic about caring for a pet if he/she has thought about why the pet is special to him/her. Pets are indeed special friends to those who love them. With a few simple prayers, a pet's presence in the home becomes yet another way believers may connect with God and rejoice in the beauty of creation.
