Tips for moving with your dog or cat

Moving is hard work by itself but taking a pet along takes careful planning and if moving out of the country can take months to complete all the requirements.

These are simple steps to get you started but she should also talk to your veterinarian and learn the requirements for the country you are moving to. You don't have to get rid of your pet because you are moving just be prepared and don't procrastinate.

Plan ahead – Take the time to check your destinations vaccination requirements, these will vary by nation. Also, if flying with your pet or taking your pet across borders, your pet will need to first see a veterinarian for a health certificate. These plans can take months, so check all the requirements for your destination and give yourself time to complete them. Check the US Department of Agriculture for a complete list of travel requirements for the United States. Travel requirements in Europe include a pet passport for more information I've provided a link to Traveling in Europe.

Identification – I cannot stress enough the importance of pet identification. Whether traveling 2 miles or 2000 miles always have proper identification on your pet, it will be the surest way of getting your pet back if it becomes lost. Proper identification includes – collar with ID tag and a tattoo or microchip. The microchip is becoming more popular and is a requirement for travel in some countries.

Medical and vaccination records – While traveling with a pet keep vaccination records handy, also have records indicating any major medical problem and medications your pet is currently taking. This will be helpful if your pet needs to see a veterinarian while on the road or needs a prescription refilled.

Packing for your pet – Your pet will need the obvious – food/water dishes, plenty of food for the move, and a blanket or bed. But don't forget medications – bring extra, toys – to fight boredom, litter box and litter for the cat, and a picture of your pets for identification if they become lost or stolen.

Crates and leashes – Invest in a good, sturdy crate for your pet to travel in. If riding in a vehicle your pet will be safer and feel safer in it's own crate. If you choose not to crate then always have your pet on a leash especially at rest stops. A well trained dog cannot always resist the temptation to chase a squirrel and why chance losing a beloved pet while on vacation or in the middle of a move. A crate is a requirement for air travel so check the requirements for size of crate versus size of animal.

Hotels/Motels – Traveling with a pet is not always easy but it is getting easier now that many hotels/motels are excepting pets. It is always a good idea to have reservations in advance. Lets Go Pets is a website that provides information on pet friendly hotels, type in your destination and the website will provide the necessary information for making reservations.
