Don't forget your pet when setting this years New Years Resolutions. Here are 10 ideas for New Years goals that involve your pets health and well being.

  1. Weight loss – Many pets are just a few pounds overweight and some suffer with obesity. A pet that is overweight has an increased chance of developing conditions such as arthritis and diabetes. Putting an obese or overweight pet on a reduced calorie diet will help the dog or cat reach a healthy weight and might help prevent future health problems.
  2. Walk Your Dog – Making a goal to walk your dog everyday will help you and your pet get into better shape. The dog should always walk next to or behind it's owner; this helps teach the dog it's place in the family.
  3. Annual Exam – Dogs and cats should see their doctor at least once a year for a physical exam. Senior pets should see their doctor twice a year. Dogs and cats age faster then humans so as they get older health problems arise at a faster rate; making biannual exams necessary. If your pet has not seen a veterinarian in the last year consider making an appointment for its physical exam.
  4. Vaccinations – Many vaccinations are recommended yearly and a current rabies vaccination is required in most cities in the United States. Find out what vaccinations are recommended for your pet and make an appointment to have your pets vaccinations updated.
  5. Heartworm and Flea Prevention – Heartworm and flea prevention is important for the health of your pet. Heartworm and flea infestations can be prevented by using a once a month tablet or spot-on treatment. Pets that are not currently taking heartworm prevention should first have a blood test to make sure they are not already infected. If your pets are not currently taking heartworm and flea prevention talk to your veterinarian about starting this important medication.
  6. Microchip – Microchips can ID your pet even when a collar is lost. Many veterinary practices carry microchips and recommend there use. Once activated the microchip number is then registered to the owner. If lost your pet can be identified at the local shelter or Humane Society through the microchip. If your pet is not already microchiped consider having it done as part of your New Years Resolution.
  7. Dental Cleaning – If a dental cleaning has been recommended by your veterinarian it is a good idea to have this procedure performed. Bacteria from the teeth and gums can enter the blood stream causing damage to the internal organs. This can be prevented by having the teeth scaled and polished.
  8. Rescue – Rescue groups are always in need of volunteers and contributions. What a great New Years Resolution; to give time, money, or food and blankets to an animal welfare organizations.
  9. Spay or Neuter – If your pet is not already spayed or neutered, consider having the procedure done this year. Spayed and neutered pets are healthier because of the surgery. The procedure is relatively safe and most patients go home the next day.
  10. Obedience Training – Pets that are lacking in the manners department might benefit from some training lessons. Why not set a goal to whip your pet into shape. Most families are happier with a well trained dog as their companion. If potty training is an issue, then make a resolution to be “accident free” in the New Year.
