Bonding with a puppy is important. Being prepared can make getting a new puppy a more rewarding experience and help the transition go smoothly.

Getting a new pet is always an exciting time, whether it's for a single person or for a family. However, there is also stress when a new pet is added to a household, and there's a period of adjustment, as well. If one is about to add a new pet, it's important to make sure that preparations have been made. That's especially true with a puppy, because puppies require a lot of care and attention.

New Puppy Preparations

Puppies need a lot of love, care, and attention, but they also need basic essentials like food and water. Before a new puppy arrives home, the new owner should be sure to buy food - and to make sure that it's for puppies and not for adult dogs. Puppies have different nutritional needs, and they need high-quality food so that they can grow up strong and healthy. Dishes to hold both food and water should be purchased.

The new arrival will want something to play with, too, and it's much better if a puppy learns to play with toys that his new owner approves of instead of chewing up shoes and couch cushions. Buy some strong toys for the new puppy, and some that make noise. Experiment with some different toys so that the puppy has a choice. He will decide what he likes best, and those are the toys that should be replaced when they wear out. Other needs items include a collar, a brush to keep down hair that can cause allergy problems, and a crate, as well as a bed or other soft place to sleep.

Ways to Bond With a New Puppy

For many owners, bonding with a new puppy is very important as the start of a good relationship. Dogs that have a good bond with their owner are also more likely to obey properly and to be more interested in following commands, because they want to please their owner. Play time can be one of the best times for bonding, because it helps teach the puppy that the human is the 'pack leader.'

Another good time to bond is when the new puppy is being bathed or when he's very sleepy and can be on your lap or on the couch with you. Some people don't like to have their pet on their furniture but will let the puppy sleep on the floor near their feet. Others simply put their new puppy in bed with them at night. Many people don't recommend this until a puppy is housebroken, however.

Puppies are a lot of work, they are full of boundless energy, and they can be a chore at times, even for someone who really loves dogs. However, they are also great companions, can be very loyal, and can even help people who have depression and anxiety feel better. They bring a lot of joy to the lives of many people every year, and when someone decides to get a puppy it can be a great experience. Being prepared for the puppy's arrival is the best way to have a good experience and begin bonding with the new arrival right away.
