As much as dogs and cats are well loved and put up with, pet hair can cause frustration and embarrassment. A few simple routines can help avoid tumble weeds at home.

There many expensive vacuum cleaners out there with strong suction and powerful brushes that would pick up dog hair and cat hair magically off the floor and furniture. However, it is not practical for most people to lug the heavy duty vacuum out from the basement all the time. The fans behind most canister vacuum cleaners do not help either when there is pet hair everywhere on the floor.

Depending on the time of year (e.g. shedding seasons) or the type of pet (e.g. a shiba inu which sheds all the time), a few simple home cleaning routines, adjusted to individual situations, can minimize the time spent on home cleaning and the amount of tumble weeds rolling across the living room.

Weekly Home Cleaning

  • Brushing - Although brushing is not really part of home cleaning, regular brushing will help getting rid of shed hair in large volume in a single brushing and minimize pet hair scattered all over the house. FURminator has become a very popular brushing tool and it works particularly well on dogs and cats with undercoats.

  • Vacuuming - If the flooring is hard surface, use an upright vacuum cleaner instead of a canister vacuum cleaner if possible. When the canister is being lugged on hard surface, pet hair and dirt on the floor are being blown around by the fan behind the canister. Choose an upright model that comes with tools that can go underneath furniture and work on upholstery. Otherwise, a light weight canister that can be carried around will do as well.
Daily Home Cleaning

  • Floor - If noise is not a concern, the Swiffer SweeperVac (or similar products) is the most versatile tool to pick up dog hair or cat hair on hard surface flooring. It is light-weight and cordless. A single charge can cover up to approximately 1,500 square feet. However, if waking up neighbours or other household members is a concern, the Swiffer Duster with Extension Handle is an excellent alternative. Although intended for dusting, it works just as well on hard surface flooring with the extension handle. Besides, it maneuvers under furniture much more effectively. It can easily cover tight spaces and even the top of the baseboards. Both products are compact enough that they can be placed aside and used anytime during the day. They also come with scented refills.

  • Upholstery - Stock up on lint rollers. Inexpensive versions for less than $2 can be purchased from places like IKEA. A few rolls on the dog bed and other fabric furniture can easily get rid of a substantial amount of dog hair on the upholstery.
Unless time can be reversed to allow a different breed to be adopted (e.g. picking a poodle that does not shed), pet hair comes with the love that the pet brings to all members in the family. However, a few easy home cleaning and pet hair removing routines with smart products can allow its love to be appreciated even more.
