Summer Proof Your PetsHow to Protect your Cats and Dogs from the Heat and Bugs of Summer
Family pets are particularly susceptible to the heat and humidity of summer. Be alert to the potential risks to protect your dog or cat's health and save on vet bills.
Pets are very susceptible to heat stroke which can kill a small animal is a matter of minutes. Keep your pet cool by not over exercising, over feeding or leaving it in parked cars or out in the sun when it is hot and humid. Always have plenty of water available and keep it in the shade or indoors. If your pet is panting excessively or trembling give it plenty of cold water to lower body temperature. Keeping Your Pet Healthy for SummerYour pet will cope with the pressures of summer much easier if it is healthy to begin with. Heat can exacerbate any underlying illness and may even make it harder to treat so it is important to see a veterinarian before summer starts. Be sure to get all vaccinations up to date and have your pet treated for heartworms, the most common danger to your dog's health in summer. Heartworm larvae is carried by mosquitoes and can cause serious heart problems especially in dogs. When a dog is bitten, the larvae enter the blood stream where they grow to adult heartworms which can enter the heart and cause damage and even death. These parasites are easily preventable with a course of medication from your veterinarian. Fleas love hot and humid weather and therefore are a particular problem in summer. Besides being uncomfortable, they can effect the health of your pet. Excessive scratching and biting can lead to skin problems and rashes which may require treatment. Fleas also carry more serious organisms such as tapeworm and roundworms. Having your pet treated regularly for fleas will maintain their health and save you money in the long run. Grooming Your PetIt may be tempting to clip or shave your pet for summer but this may do more harm than good. Your pet's coat insulates it from the heat and protects against insect bites so clipping may lead to sunburn and skin problems. Instead, groom your pet with regular brushing. This will clean the coat and help you to spot any skin problems or flea infestations before they become too severe. On the Road with Your PetMost dogs love vacations. To keep them safe on the road be sure that they are secure in the car or camper. Get a carrier or portable kennel for your pet and provide plenty of ventilation and water. Provide frequent rest breaks but do not let them run loose in unfamiliar territory where they may run out onto the road or encounter a new animal such as a skunk or bear. Pets are very vulnerable to the heat and humidity of summer but awareness combined with a few simple precautions will contribute to you and your pet's enjoyment of the season..
