Avoid Leaving Your Dog in the Car

During the hot summer months veterinarians see an increase of dogs suffering from heat stroke. Many of these dogs were left for too long in a hot vehicle.

I was in the grocery store parking lot and noticed someone had left their dog in the car. I'm sure the windows where cracked and the owner would only be gone for a few minutes but vehicles can heat up remarkably fast.

I was reminded of the time a friend of mine took her 3 Shih Tzu's to her car, started the car and turned on the AC. She went back inside for her purse, by the time she had gotten back to the car all three dogs were in the first stages of heat stroke and needed immediate veterinary care. The car was still too hot for the dogs, the AC had not run long enough to properly cool the car. The dogs are all fine today but now she starts the car and gives it a chance to cool off before leaving her dogs for even a minute.

The car is a very dangerous place during the summer. Please plan to leave your dog or cat at home while running errands. A minute or two can be too long when the temperatures are on the rise.
