There are many dog foods and cat foods available today, it can be confusing as to which brand to purchase. A good quality diet is important for the health of your dog or

Puppy's and kittens should eat puppy or kitten food. This food is formulated for growing animals. Pregnant and nursing pets should also be on puppy or kitten food, they require a lot of calories to produce milk and need extra calcium to avoid eclampsia which can cause seizures.

Senior pets should have a senior diet. Dogs and cats are usually classified as seniors at age 7. At this time switch them slowly to a senior diet. These diets contain less protein and are formulated specifically for older pets.

When choosing a pet food price matters, you get what you pay for. There are many good foods out there, some are: Science Diet, Eukanuba, Iams, Purina, Pro Plan Nutro, and Natures Choice. Don't bother reading labels and comparing ingredients (your head may start spinning). Look at the price of Purina Dog Chow/Cat Chow and don't spend less. If you feed a good quality diet there is no need to supplement with vitamins. Also, never give table scraps, you'll just start bad habits like begging. Table scraps can also cause intestinal upset like diarrhea and pancreatitis.

If your pet is overweight then try a weight reducing diet. Most pet food companys offer a diet specifically for weight loss. Your veterinarian can make a recommendation for a diet that would work best for your pet.

Switching diets should be done slowly, over a weeks time. Start mixing more and more of the new diet with the old diet. If the diet is changed to quickly your dog or cat may suffer with diarrhea, vomiting, gas, and bloating.
