Clicker training is a method that uses positive reinforcement - working with the dog. You reinforce behaviors you want instead of punishing behaviors you don't want. It is a much gentler approach to training and the trainer usually has a lot more fun, so does the animal for that matter. For example if teaching an animal to sit you would lure the dog/cat into the sitting position - click then treat. The animal should already have been taught that click = treat before attempting any behaviors, by first conditioning the animal to the clicker, simply click then treat about 20 times so the animal is anticipating a treat after hearing the click.
In my homework assignment I have to train my pets to do certain tasks, and I have 5 weeks to do it in. My cat is not deaf, I know this because she comes when called, but that cat ignores the clicker. She likes the getting treats part but I honestly don't believe she has made the connection that click = treat. This assignment is going to be a lot of work. I have 5 weeks of training to do with her I just hope we make it.
Clicker training my dog has been a treat. She is 9 years old, and loves it. She hears that click and knows exactly what it means. I'm currently teaching her to crawl and she looks so cute. I think a lab will do anything for food. We'll see, I'm going to try "roll over" next.
