Pet CareMange in Dogs
» ragdoll50 - Demodectic mange Hi: I have a 5 mth old irish wolfhound or bouvier cross with Demodectic mange. I got her at the SPCA so not sure on the mix. She has a spot low on her forehead just to the right of her eye and below the same eye I'm also seeing baldness.I'm hoping to use the Ivermectin to treat it. Has anyone else used this? -- posted by ragdoll50 » charladawson - Demodectic mange In response to Demodectic mange posted by ragdoll50:Ivermectin is definitely the first choice in treating mange. I've seen it used effectively numerous times. Has the mange in your dog been diagnosed by a veterinarian with a skin scraping? I would do this first before starting treatment. Ivermectin is a prescription and needs to be correctly dosed by a veterinarian for the treatment to be effective. Treatment for mange can be long so don't get discouraged, I'm sure your dog will be fine. -- posted by charladawson » tink9166 - 18 month old yellow lad my lab has been fighting this red mange from the time she was 3 months old, this has been a merry go round for us. she is treating with baths and dips at the vet, and medication then gets better then once the meds are out of her system within a month or a month and a half she breaks out again. this has started running us to the poor house. i have spent almost 2 grand already on this problem and seem to get no where. even the vet has now thrown his hands up in the air about it. i am at my wits end. i love my dog but am getting so tired of everthing.i wonding if there is anything else that is out there we can try. please let us know.-- posted by tink9166 » Tucksmom - 18 month old yellow lad In response to 18 month old yellow lad posted by tink9166:I feel your pain, my Boston Terrier is only 8 mths old and he's only had mange (sarcoptic) for 2 mths so far and I am driving myself crazy he keeps me up all night scratching and i just wanna cry when i look at him. He has bald spots and he's bleeding from chewing himself, he has a cone on (ecollar) right now but that only saves his ears which hes been tearing up pretty badly. Our vet said revolution is the best and he's had two doses of that and she put him on prednezone and we thought he was getting better because he cleared up but as soon as he was off it for a week it came right back. So if you find anything that works please let me know and I'll do the same for you and if anyone out there knows anything please help babybluechic_@hotmail.com -- posted by Tucksmom » charladawson - 18 month old yellow lad In response to 18 month old yellow lad posted by Tucksmom:Revolution is great at preventing Sarcoptic mange but you may want to get a second opinion. I've had a lot of experience with Ivermectin orally working great against mange - sarcoptic and demodectic. If you've not tried Ivermectin, I would look into it. Stay on Revolution though, it does work great. Mange is a long and difficult road to go down. I assume this is demodectic mange. You've already spent a lot of money on your dog with this vet - I would see how someone else (another vet)would treat it. Don't feel bad about getting a second opinion. Another vet may have a treatment that will work. What medications did your vet prescribe? -- posted by charladawson » Tansi_girl - Demodectic mange In response to Demodectic mange posted by ragdoll50:-- posted by Tansi_girl » Tansi_girl - 18 month old yellow lad In response to 18 month old yellow lad posted by tink9166:I have a small rescue dog that has lost a lot of hair on more than 50% of her body. I was told that it was a food allergy when I took her to the vet. Treatment didn't work. I was advised to give her Advantage Multi which I did a few days ago and she is no longer itching and her hair is growing back. I am sure she had mange...it should be cleared up with 3-4 treatments. It will be great to see her with a full coat again. -- posted by Tansi_girl
