» mrstrubyaolcom - pomeranian with diabeties

I have a pomeranian I am trying desperately to save. She had 2
seizures before going to vet. She
has been in hospital for 7 days. She
started to improve, but there staff
takes her from 450 down to 50. I think
she needs short term insulin at this point because she has lost so much weight, is stressed and has a low caloric
intake. They are giving her long term
insulin 2x day, but her intake of food is
off because of the seizures. They are
feeding her baby food at the moment.

They will not allow me to draw reading or
take urine samples when she was home and
that was how we got to this. I'm diabetic and know how to take reading from myself and feel perfectly comfortable taking them from her.

When she had her seizure, she was 28, I
did not know if she was too high or too
low.

Help- need to know if taking readings at
home is uncommon.

Thank you.

In response to pomeranian with diabeties posted by mrstrubyaolcom:
It is unusual to take blood glucose readings at home but some people choose to anyway. 28 is dangerously low. Hypoglycemia is actually more dangerous then hyperglycemia.

Normal glucose levels for a dog are 75 - 115. Nobody can prevent you from checking levels at home, insist on them teaching you how if that's what you want to do. NEVER CHANGE HER DOSE OF INSULIN WITHOUT FIRST CHECKING WITH YOUR VET.

So she seizures when she is too low? You may need to feed her multiple meals a day. Has your vet checked electrolytes? I would look into that too. I've seen small breed dogs in trouble because of electrolytes being off. I'm not a vet and I've not personally seen your dog so these are just some thoughts based on what you've told me.

How long has your dog been diabetic and how old is she?

Good luck
Charla
