» mamarobin73 - Natural treatments for dogs with arthritis

Our dog, Olive, is an akita/bull mix, and she is 9 years old. She has just been diganosed with arthritis in her right hip. She moves a lot slower these days, but doesn't seem to be in too much pain. Our vet has recommended a few options for treatment, all of which are very costly. She would not recommend ANY natural remedies to us at all, even though Olive has a history of having very bad reactions with any medications that she has been given. My question is, do you know of any natural remedies (herbs, oils, etc.) that we can give her that will keep her comfortable? Thanks for any advice you can give me!

Well, it's hard for me to recommend something that your vet doesn't, for whatever reason, want you to use. Homeopathic medication can have reactions just like the man made stuff.

You might want to get a second opinion with a vet that will use homeopathic drugs. Some vets do acupuncture and I've seen that help arthritis. That being said this what I would try.

Glucosamines have helped a lot of dogs, so has Vitamen C. So you could try those. Dogs usually won't have reactions and you can get them anywhere. They make dog glucosamine but the people stuff works too. Also, magnet beds have helped some dogs and that won't cause a reaction. http://www.magnamat.com/

Thanks Robin and good luck

Thank you for your advice, Charla. I will definitely look into the glucosamine, and the magnet bed sounds interesting. Thanks again!
